MEET TRIP

Trip Hawkins, empire builder, video game industry creator and founder of Electronic Arts (EA) is often called a legend.

Finding celebrity and business acclaim early, Trip has been featured in every major media outlet. This includes the rare distinction as one of People Magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People” while also being crowned “King of the Nerds” by The Economist.

One of the first to be inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame, Trip’s passion for strategy and gaming began almost as soon as he could play with army men or roll dice.

A born entrepreneur, Trip designed, produced and marketed his first game while a teenager. After it got great reviews but failed as a business, he mapped out a 10-year plan to prepare for the founding of Electronic Arts. This involved creating the world’s first college degree in video games, making his way to Silicon Valley in time for the birth of home computers, writing the first national market research study about personal computers and joining Apple at a time when the company had only 25 office workers and had sold only 13 personal computers to businesses.

Trip worked closely with Apple’s founders, notably Steve Jobs, for four years. He led Apple’s planning and execution in the office desktop market and helped grow the company to a Fortune 500 leader with 4,000 employees. Trip gave birth to Electronic Arts (EA) in 1982, where software became a new art form—creating a “New Hollywood” in Silicon Valley.

He led EA for more than a decade, taking it public as an independent industry leader in 1989. It is valued at nearly $30 billion today. Trip later founded 3DO, going through his third IPO and continued to build big digital brands and pioneer new areas including the internet, GPUs, 3D engines, cloud services, digital media, social media, mobile apps, eSports, free to play games, virtual goods economies, VR, AR, Games as a Service, and new tech sectors including sustainability, organic food, EdTech, FinTech, ergonomics and drones.

A CEO for 33 years in four global companies, and an advisor to many other CEOs, Trip believes that success is only in part about how far we rise. The principles he practices and teaches today, which include strategies for financial gain—also address living with happiness, purpose and meaning while overcoming setbacks with grace, wisdom and tenacity.

Trip graduated magna cum laude from Harvard and has an MBA from Stanford, where he also graduated with high distinction. He lives in Santa Barbara, California where he served from 2016-2019 as a professor of entrepreneurship and leadership at the University of California.

While he is the recipient of numerous awards, Trip is the proudest of his graduate degree in the school of life and most notably his PhD in the School of Hard Knocks. This educational 20-year journey into the mastery of stress and resilience was thanks to experts at Stanford, Yale, UCSF and the Institute for Social and Emotional Learning. In addition, Trip has read more than 1,000 personal development books on subjects that include behavioral therapies, mindfulness and EQ practices that he uses daily.

Can you help me get in touch with EA?

Sorry, I cannot, as I have no formal relationship with EA.

Can you help me with intellectual property (IP) rights or collectibles from Apple, EA, 3DO or Digital Chocolate?

Sorry, I cannot.  I don’t own or control any of the IP and don’t know or work with any of the current owners.

My game has bugs or there is a problem with my account, can you fix it for me please?

Sorry, I cannot.  Please contact customer service at the game publisher.

Hey Trip, how come you didn't reply to me on social media (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, etc.)?

There are fake social accounts out there that aren’t mine, and volume and time are also an issue.  I respond when necessary via this website.
